Pregnancy Acupuncture & Moxibustion for Breech Babies in Shepton Mallet, Wells & Bristol

Acupuncture and moxibustion are traditional Chinese medicine techniques that encourage a breech baby to turn naturally into a head-down position.

How can acupuncture and moxibustion help breech babies?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), moxibustion is used to gently warm and stimulate specific acupuncture points to encourage the flow of energy throughout the body. For a breech presentation, practitioners use a point known as BL67 (Zhiyin), which is located on the outer corner of each little toe.

This specific point shares a close connection with the Kidney system (reproduction) and the lower abdomen. By applying gentle heat here to stimulate the movement of Qi, moxibustion helps support the body's natural rhythm, ultimately encouraging the baby to turn into a head-down position.

Acupuncture may also be used alongside moxibustion to support the mother in preparing for labour — helping to promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, relax tendons and ligaments, support healthy blood flow to the uterus, regulate the nervous system and address any individual pregnancy symptoms.

What does the NHS say?

This approach is also widely recognised within UK maternity care.

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust include moxibustion as one of the options discussed with women whose babies are breech. Their maternity guidance states that moxibustion close to BL67 may correct breech presentation and that published evidence suggests it is effective in reducing the need for an external cephalic version (ECV).

They advise that women with a breech presentation may seek moxibustion treatment from 32–38 weeks.

Client Testimonial

"I came to Claire in my 3rd trimester of pregnancy with the aim of preparing my body for labour. We went on a journey over 6 sessions, during which time my baby had turned to a sideways position. Not only did Claire successfully turn him using acupuncture techniques, she was also able to tune into my emotional state, which gave me a feeling that I was being treated holistically rather than just for the induction of labour."

– Tess

What is a breech baby?

A breech baby is positioned bottom or feet down rather than head down, which is the safest and most common position for vaginal delivery, occurring in about 96% of full-term pregnancies.

While breech presentation is not inherently dangerous during pregnancy, vaginal delivery with a breech baby is risky because the body is not anatomically suited for it, causing significant worry for the expectant mother.

Types of breech presentation include frank, complete, and footling breech.

Most babies move into a head-down position before labour. If your baby remains breech in later pregnancy stages, your midwife or consultant will discuss your options.

One option is external cephalic version (ECV), where gentle pressure on the abdomen encourages the baby to turn. Some women find this invasive and prefer gentler, natural alternatives.

Acupuncture and moxibustion are complementary approaches which have been used for hundreds of years and can be employed alongside your usual maternity care.

When should pregnancy acupuncture & moxibustion treatment start for breech babies?

Treatment is generally started around 32–35 weeks of pregnancy, depending on your individual circumstances and your baby's position.

This gives your baby time and space to turn before labour.

Your treatment plan will be tailored to you and may involve acupuncture, moxibustion or a combination of both.

What happens during breech acupuncture & moxibustion treatment?

Your appointment will begin with a consultation so that we can understand how you are feeling and discuss your pregnancy and baby's position.

Very fine acupuncture needles may be used at selected points on your limbs, depending on your individual needs.

Moxibustion is then gently applied to the relevant acupuncture point. You will feel a gentle warmth, though moxa never actually comes into contact with the skin.

Treatment is usually relaxing, and many women find this a lovely opportunity to slow down, breathe and connect with their baby.

Can acupuncture guarantee that my baby will turn?

No treatment can guarantee that a breech baby will turn.

Babies can and do turn naturally, and there are many factors that influence their position.

The aim of acupuncture and moxibustion is to encourage and support your baby's natural movement, rather than physically turn the baby.

It is also important that acupuncture and moxibustion are viewed as complementary to your maternity care.

What does the research say?

There is encouraging research into the use of moxibustion for breech presentation.

A 2023 Cochrane review looked at 13 studies involving 2,181 women. It found moderate-certainty evidence that moxibustion alongside usual care reduced the likelihood of a baby remaining in a non-head-down position at birth.

An earlier randomised controlled trial published in JAMA also found promising results. Women with breech babies at around 33 weeks received moxibustion at BL67 for one to two weeks. At 35 weeks, 75.4% of babies in the treatment group were in a head-down position compared with 47.7% in the control group. At birth, 75.4% of babies in the treatment group were cephalic compared with 62.3% in the control group.
